Sandhurst Farm Forge

----“More than a business very definitely a way of life”----

Sandhurst Farm Forge sprung to life on the outskirts of Newnham, Kent in 1995, as our family moved from Wragby in West Yorkshire. One small child and another on the way the first few years were somewhat hectic, but idyllic. A most beautiful part of the North Kent Chalk Downs, surrounded by ancient English woodland, chestnut coppicing industries, sheep, cattle, cherries and hops! In deed the landscape has

been an amazing source of inspiration not only for Charlie and the Forge, but also for both our children, Isabel now a fledgling potter and textiles artist, and Will a fine art sculptor working with wood, stone, metals and as many raw materials as he can find.

Charlie hammeringCharles is a third generation Blacksmith, having learnt his trade from his father signing his indentures at the age of 15 taking a five year apprenticeship, to become a skilled blacksmith, farrier and agricultural blacksmith. Charles' work is a mix of traditional /artistic,and creative quirkiness.Using coke forge, hammer and anvil. Not forgetting the power hammer, both human and mechanical!!

This year all four of us are taking part in “Open Artists Houses” Faversham Trail which takes place next month for 3 October weekends 15th /16th, 22nd/23rd, &29th/30th. The Forge will be lit during each weekend, Isabel will be demonstrating throwing on the wheel and hand building. For myself, having trained as a textiles teacher many moons ago.I will be hopefully be re-connecting with fabrics and threads. Will has a selection of his wood turning and other pieces on show.

As well as the Forge and our passion for Creative activities we run a two roomed Bed and Breakfast. A converted stable block with en-suite shower rooms, king sized beds.

 Annexe Stableblock sandhurst

The Annexe started life as a tractor bay with just a roof and pillars. It was then converted into stables in the 1960’s and finally into a B&B during the late 1980’s. When we took over in 1995 , it was re-wired, and redecorated and we opened for business in 1996.We have had a variety of guests some short stay ,some long stay. Our longest staying guest rang just after we had opened to ask if it was possible to stay for 3 or 4 nights a week for 6 months or maybe a year. He ended up staying 16 (sixteen) years until he finally retired!!  Some guests are weekenders, walkers, business, weddings, continental overnighters. It really is a very varied business, meeting an amazing variety of people.

Looking back over the last 21 years and hopefully many more to come!!  Sandhurst Farm Forge has truly been a home, and we are pleased to have welcomed so many people through the gates to sample just some of the countryside and community that we have been so fortunate to have been able to live within.

If you can find the time to visit during Artist Open House please do. You would be most welcome.
